Let me address the difference between an ideological democrat and an ideological republican. I say ideological because I am addressing political belief systems, not the political parties. This writing will feel uncomfortable to some people, I know, because it contradicts their own belief systems. See my earlier writing on political moral grammar for more on this.
A democrat believes in the power of democracy.
A constitutional republican, or just republican for short, believes in the power of a constitution that encodes principles of good government in the laws that form it.
The funny thing here in America, there are, I would guess, about five true ideological republicans living here today. Basically all of the rest of the population are either democrats or leftists.
About half of the democracts believe they are republicans in their personal ideology. They are not. Would you like to know how to tell the difference between an ideological democrat and an ideological republican? It’s easy.
A democrat is someone who cries out for “we the people” to come to our senses and act en mass to fix the problems in government. It’s that simple. That belief defines an ideological democrat.
A republican is someone who believes that the Constitution defines the government and that problems in government are fixed by realigning the Constitution so it reflects principles of good government better. A movement by the majority is not needed. The key idea here is the concept of “principles of good government.”
A republican considers carefully what principles do and do not constitute good government. That differentiates a republican from a leftist. Leftists ignore history and rationality. They press for change without considering the facts of history or reasoned arguments. Leftists repeat the same mistakes over and over.
Leftist movements are always driven by people who lust for power. Leftist leaders look for followers primarily among the people who are unwilling to learn the facts of history. History shows us that leftist governments are always miserable and corrupt affairs.
A republican considers history and reasoned arguments, learns the principles of good government, and adapts the principles into laws for governing the nation. As long as proper principles are applied and the laws are followed (meaning that they are enforced), a happy population results. A true republican recognizes that the laws must be actively enforced if they are to have any meaning. Can you imagine what the freeways would be like if there were good rules for the road, but no police watching the traffic and issuing tickets? Can you imagine what a professional football game would be like if there were good rules for the game, but no referees to assess penalties? Can you imagine what a government would be like if there were good rules of government, but no one to call out and act on violations of the rules of government? It would be chaos, wouldn’t it!
A democrat insists that enforcement should come from the democracy. In the case of a representative democracy such as the US, a democrat insists that enforcement should come from the representatives policing themselves. That never works. That always results in widespread abuse.
A leftist insists that enforcement should come from the elite leaders. That never works. That always results in centralized abuse.
A republican insists that enforcement should come from dedicated officers, authorized and obligated to call out violations and require punitive actions against the violators.
Many confused democrats believe they are republicans. They say they believe in the Constutition, but they do not have a good understanding of what it is or what it says. They only care that it empowers the democracy, and democracy is good, so the Constitution is good. Few of them make the jump for democrat to republican, because they cannot accept the reality that democracy is a bad thing. Democracy as the Framers knew quite well is an inherently irrational and immoral system of government. It inevitably leads to national collapse. Read the earlier Federalist Papers, especially Federalist Number 10.
You do not have law unless the law is actively enforced. If you do not have enforcement, you do not really have laws. You do not truely believe in the set of laws that is the Constitution unless you believe those laws must be actively and effectively enforced. You can believe that you believe in the Constitution, but if you don’t believe it should be actively and effectivley enforced, you do not really believe in the Constitution; you are a democrat, not a republican.
In the light of natural law we can see that democracy is inherently unable to enforce the written law. Likewise we can see that the balance of powers is inherently unable to enforce the written law.
America is not a constitutional republic because her laws are not effectively enforced. Put theory aside and look around you. Isn’t the state of the US government today the proof in the pudding?
Sadly, so many Americans today are so heavily conditioned to believe the democracy is good and true republicanism is bad, that America is most likely on her last legs. Only a true republican leader can fix America’s problems.
Stumble it!
