As I mentioned elsewhere, my faith consists of three simple things; love for God, love for others, and loving wisely.
Love for others comes naturally and without effort. Commanding someone to love is like commanding them the breathe. We do it just because it is our nature. Love is a law in the sense that gravity is a law. It is not a commandment.
Love by itself is not a virtue unless the acts of love are constructive, we must love wisely.
What about loving God? When we don’t believe in the God of many churches, which is essentially an idol, God becomes an abstraction, an unseen spirit.
How can one love an invisible God?
The real God is an abstraction to us. God is that which created nature, so God exists in an unnatural sense of the word ‘exists.’ God is not a natural thing like a rock or a tree or a dog. God is not subject to principles of natural law. God does not need a creator like natural things do.
How can we love something so abstract?
The answer is we don’t. We can, however, recognize the truth that our life has a source. We are alive and were brought into being.
As we love life, we love God.
When we appreciate that God is the ultimate origin of our life, our love of life becomes our love for God. That is what is meant by “love for God.”
God’s love for us is expressed by giving us life.
You don’t need a religious idol and its cult to understand that.
Stumble it!
