I came across more research on the size of the US population that can be considered Deists. This article summarizes two sources, Harris Interactive, and The Baylor Institute for Studies of Religion.

According to the Baylor study, US citizens who have a Deist belief system make up about 25% of the population. This research seems credible. According to Harris, US citizens who have a Deist belief system make up about 44% of the population, but I’m not sure how accurate this is since this isn’t peer reviewed research.
The results of different formal and informal surveys that I am seeing seem to be centering around 25%. For my purposes, this is close enough to accurate.
Why are these statistics relevant? Well, some of us are considering the possibilities of popular Deist organizations. One of the things necessary for an actual religious organization is membership. Since a relatively large portion of the population holds Deist views there does appear to be a public base for a sustainable organization.
Some questions now are: What would make a Deist organization relevant to that 25% of the population? Why would that 25% join a Deism centered organization? Why might they want to give time and money to that organization and what might inspire them to attend a service once a week or so, instead of attending a church of another belief system? What might the organization do for them that added enough value to the lives of the attendants to make their involvement worth their while? How might the efforts it would take to establish the organization make it worthwhile to the organizers?
Stumble it!
