I used to wonder what the essence of love is.  My mom passed away a few weeks ago, and now I know.

love note

Love is the essence of what we are.  We don’t love; we are love. We don’t give love; we give of ourselves and that is being loving.  We don’t love another person; we are just close to the other person and that is enough.

When we are young a lot of what we believe about love comes from our ideas about erotic love.  We fall in love.  We fall out of love.  Erotic love comes and goes.   True love does not waver.

Sadly, we don’t always love in ways that are positive and healthy.  But we do get better at loving as we get older.  We learn from harsh experiences that loving in unhealthy ways causes problems for us and others, so we change.  Love doesn’t change; the way we love changes.

The Amorian church should be a place to learn how to love well.

What I call the Amorian faith is this religiously felt belief that life is about loving well, and spirituality doesn’t need to be more complex than that.
